The Landgraaf site comprises a transfer station, an operational landfill and a processing location for rubble and other mineral streams. A sustainable landfill pilot started at this site in 2001. The biochemical processes in the landfill body are measured regularly for this purpose. The goal of this project is to achieve a stable and mature landfill in one generation, or 30 years. The costly perpetual aftercare that a conventional landfill requires could potentially be avoided by this. The landfill provides landfill gas that is used to generate energy. The pre-treatment of the wastewater collected from the landfill is performed by the in-house water treatment plant. Groundwater quality is monitored with samples taken from monitoring well pipes near the landfill. Underneath the landfill is a tunnel for the discharge of waste water from the landfill body and the monitoring thereof.
