This former regional landfill is part of the Gulbergen estate, an area between Eindhoven and Helmond measuring 325 hectares. Attero has owned the landfill site since 1997. The landfill site was closed down in 2003 and the waste transfer station was moved to Eindhoven (Acht) in 2009. The landfill is largely equipped with protective measures for collecting contaminated water. The final top sealing was completed in 2010. Wastewater is collected and disposed of for treatment at a plant elsewhere. The landfill gas extracted from the landfill is delivered Carbiogas’s plant. Here, it is upgraded to reach natural gas quality and pumped into the public grid as green gas.

Monitoring of groundwater quality is performed on the basis of samples taken through a network of monitoring well pipes near and monitoring drains underneath the landfill. The entire area will be developed into a tourist-recreational landscape park for residents of the surrounding areas. This is done by the Attero-owned Beheermaatschappij Gulbergen, on behalf of landowner Samenwerkingsverband Regio Eindhoven.

In addition to the existing 27-hole golf course with clubhouse and family zoo Dierenrijk Europa, there are plans for an event site, recreational facilities such as bicycle and hiking trails, the planting of a forest and the construction of wildlife corridors.
