Renewable energy to drive the energy transitioner
Besides producing recycled materials, Attero also produces renewable energy from different waste streams and with its solar parks.
Biomethane production
Attero is leading in producing biomethane from different organic waste streams. Attero operates different anaerobic digestion plants dedicated to municipal biowaste, food waste from commercial & industrial companies, and food waste sieved from municipal solid waste. In addition, we produce biomethane from landfill gasses that are extracted from our landfill sites.
The biogas from these different sources is upgraded to biomethane with a quality that allows injection in the gas grid. Through its partnership with Nordsol, we also have the capability to liquify biomethane to bioLNG at our plant in Wilp that was opened by Her Majesty Queen Máxima.
We have the ambition to significantly grow its biomethane production in the coming years.

Steam and heat production
Attero’s energy-from-waste plants in Moerdijk and Wijster produce steam that is delivered to neighbouring industry to replace the consumption of natural gas. Steam that is not provided to industry is led to steam turbines that drive generators to produce renewable electricity that is provided to the electricity grid.
The energy-from-waste plants can also be utilized as a heat source to heat houses, greenhouses and other companies to replace even more natural gas.
Electricity production
Attero’s energy-from-waste plants produce electricity sufficient for the electricity consumption of hundreds of thousands of households every year. A second important source of renewable electricity is Attero’s solar energy production. Wer are using closed areas on our landfill locations to develop solar parks. The solar park in Wijster has 56.000 solar panels that can produce up to 31 MW of electricity.
