Wijster

Wijster site

Attero's core activities come together at the Wijster location: waste separation, sorting of plastics, recycling, energy production from waste incineration, fermentation, composting, water treatment and landfilling. It is the largest processing site Attero operates.

In the separation plant metal, plastic packaging materials and beverage cartons are removed from the waste for recycling. A non-reusable paper/plastic fraction for use as secondary fuel is also separated. The organic fraction from the residual waste is sieved of for fermentation to eventually green gas. The remaining waste is burned in the three waste lines of the waste from energy plant to generate electricity and steam. The heat produced is partly supplied as energy to the neighboring Energy Transition Park, a business park for sustainable businesses.

The industrial way of composting started at this site in 1931. It is still an important activity. There is also a large fermentation plant and compost plant for processing gft waste at the location Wijster. The biogas from the fermentation plant is being processed into green gas and injected into the gas grid. Also in Wijster there is a fermentation plant for the production of green gas from the organic wet fraction of residual waste that has been postponed. Wijster acts as the most important green gas hub in the Netherlands.

For several years Attero has become a market leader in the (post) separation and sorting of plastics out of domestic waste. By the end of 2017 Wijster will exploit the first polymer recycling plant for LDPE films in Europe.

The landfill is partly covered with a covering layer, a part is still used to deposit waste. A drainage grid is used to collect waste gas. In a special installations, landfill and biogas is being processed into sustainable natural gas quality and pumped as green gas into the regular natural gas network.

The Wijster energy-from-waste plant also processes RDF from England and Ireland.
